Follow Your
Refund

The IRS and each state run their own official status tools. We link to them directly. Nothing you type there passes through our site, and we never ask for it here.

The IRS Tools

Federal
Refunds

  1. Where's My Refund

The IRS's official tracker for a federal refund. It shows three stages: return received, refund approved and refund sent.

    When to check
24 hours after you e-file a current-year return, 3 days after you e-file a prior-year return, or 4 weeks after you file a paper return. The IRS updates the data once a day, overnight.
    What it asks for
Your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, the exact refund amount and the tax year.
Check on IRS.gov (opens the official site in a new tab)
  2. IRS app (formerly IRS2Go)

The IRS's free official mobile app, available in English or Spanish on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

    What it does
Check the status of a refund or an amended return, pay a balance or schedule a payment, and find free tax preparation help near you.
Get the app (opens the official site in a new tab)
  3. Where's My Amended Return

Status for an amended federal return (Form 1040-X).

    When to check
3 weeks after you submit Form 1040-X. The IRS asks you to allow 8 to 12 weeks for processing; in some cases it takes up to 16.
    What it asks for
Your Social Security number, your date of birth and your ZIP code.
Check an amended return (opens the official site in a new tab)

Good to Know

Early-season credits

By law, the IRS cannot issue refunds before mid-February for returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit.

State refunds move separately

Your state refund is processed by your state, on its own timeline. A federal refund being sent says nothing about the state one, and the reverse.

If you filed with us

Your client portal shows where your return stands with us, through filing and acceptance. Once it is accepted, the official tools on this page take it from there.
