Personal
Tax

Comprehensive individual tax strategies tailored to your unique financial landscape, from income optimization to deduction maximization.

Few personal returns are only a W-2. A rental, a side business, a move between states, a child starting college: each one changes the return. We prepare it with the full picture in view, in English or Spanish, and look ahead to next year while we do.

The Scope

What the work
covers

  • Federal and state individual returns

Form 1040 and the state returns that go with it, including part-year and multi-state filings for people who moved or earn income in more than one state.

  • Wages, self-employment and gig income

W-2 wages, Schedule C for freelance, rideshare and other self-employment income, and the self-employment tax and business deductions that come with it.

  • Investments and retirement income

Capital gains and losses (Form 8949 and Schedule D), dividends and interest, retirement plan distributions and Social Security benefits.

  • Rental property

Schedule E income and expenses, depreciation of the property, and the records that support them.

  • Credits that may apply to you

The Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, education credits, the child and dependent care credit, and reconciliation of premium tax credits for Marketplace health coverage (Form 8962).

  • Deductions, chosen by the numbers

The standard deduction compared against itemizing mortgage interest, state and local taxes and charitable gifts, so the choice is made on figures.

  • Amended and prior-year returns

Form 1040-X to correct a return already filed, and returns for past years that were never filed.

  • Withholding and estimated payments

A check of your W-4 withholding or quarterly estimates, so the next return holds fewer surprises.

  • Notices and correspondence

Help reading and responding to IRS and state notices about returns we prepared.

Your engagement letter sets the exact scope. The descriptions on this page are general information, not tax advice for your situation.

The Client

Who it is for

  • Employees and families with W-2 income
  • Freelancers, contractors and gig workers
  • Landlords with one property or several
  • Retirees drawing pensions, IRAs or Social Security
  • People who moved, or earn income, in more than one state
  • Spanish-speaking households who want a preparer in their language

The Engagement

How an engagement
works

Five steps, the same for every client. Your documents never travel by email, and nothing is filed until you have reviewed and signed.

  1. Consultation

A short conversation about your year: work, family, property and anything that changed. We confirm the scope in an engagement letter.

  2. Documents through the secure portal

You photograph or upload your W-2s, 1099s and other forms in your secure portal, straight from your phone.

  3. Preparation

Your preparer prepares the return in our professional tax software and asks you through the portal about anything missing.

  4. Review

The return is reviewed before it reaches you, and we explain the result and what to adjust for next year.

  5. Signature

You sign electronically, the return is filed, and you follow it in your portal until it is accepted.

Documents to gather

Upload them in your secure client portal once we begin, from a phone camera or a computer. Please never send tax documents by email.

  • W-2s from every employer
  • 1099s: NEC, MISC, K, INT, DIV, B, R, G and SSA-1099
  • Form 1098 for mortgage interest, 1098-T for tuition and 1098-E for student loan interest
  • Form 1095-A, if you had Marketplace health coverage
  • Your childcare provider's name, address and the amounts you paid
  • Records of estimated tax payments made during the year
  • Last year's return, if we did not prepare it
